The World’s First Digital Supermodel
– Creation of Cameron James-Wilson photographer
Shudu is a computer-generated social media personality and model, a “virtual influencer”. The character is considered the world’s first digital supermodel. by the fashion photographer Cameron-James Wilson.
“I wanted to create a piece of art, starting from a portrait of a beautiful woman. I was just in that kind of creative hub, locked away in my room, just being creative, being experimental.”
Cameron James Wilson
Shudu has been featured in Vogue and WWD, fronted campaigns for Balmain and Ellesse, and graced her first red carpet at the 2019 BAFTA film awards wearing a bespoke gown by Swarovski.
The first few images posted to Shudu’s Instagram account received a lot of attention. People applauded her beauty (“God took his time on you”), while some photographers slid into her DMs with requests to set up a shoot. It’s a testament to the hyper-real level of detail in Cameron’s 3D modelling.
“People are booking a digital model, and they’re booking her because she’s the world’s first digital supermodel,” he told VICE News. “If I had made a white model, if I’d made an Asian model, they’d want her just the same.”
Wilson’s newly launched digital model agency The Diigitals, also ‘represents’ ethereal, elfin Dagny, plus-sized model Brenn, Shudu’s sculpted partner Koffi, Balmain models Margot and Zhi, and shapeshifting alien Galaxia.
We’ve been talking about the marrying of tech and culture lately and watching as it all unfolds. As pure art, Cameron has no doubt realised his vision, building something out of nothing from his bedroom. Add to that the resonance and subversion of fashion culture, and you can’t help but be blown away.
Cameron, Shadu, you’ve captured what many brand builders only dream of achieving- idea to reality without compromise, and for that, we salute you.
